KITTY NEALE'S_ LOST ANGELS_ chapter 3

hilda and ellen went to somerset. upon their arrival at the platform , they saw gertie awaiting their arrival (ellen was amazed to see gertie's outfit...especially her trousers..it seemed as though women didn't wear trousers during the 1940s...weird!) . it's been a really long time since hilda last seen gertie or even talked to her. ellen turned into a 10 year old kid...gertie's horse and carriage were novel to the kid...she'd never been on a horse and cart before . so ellen and her mom got into gertie's "car",left the small town, and headed off to gertie's house. ellen sat there quietly listening in on the conversation between hilda and gertie ...(who's susan...what's wrong with gertie....and why is she loathed by most of the people who know her?  including her dad?! "lick my wounds in private"??!!and she says she loves the seclusion!)...seems like gertie lived alone for her mother had long passed away and her father was in london, probably...(what did gertie's father find out? why is he mad at gertie?). ok! so hilda and gertie have known each other for a really long time .(since the were both about 8 years old). hilda's mom used to work as a domestic in the forbes' house. at that time the 2 weren't close friends..they were barely acquaintances.( seems to me like gertie is a sort of disturbed person : her mom died , she loved her mom and hated the fact that she passed away, after her mom's death ,she was sent off to a bording school..when she returned home ,her father ignored her...and when she was about 12 years old, she was expelled from school for misbehaving, she was soo lonely with no company....).so after that...hilda's mom started taking hilda to gertie's each time she went there herself, and that's how the 2 knew each other. hilda confesses that she'd always thought of gertie as being a person from the upper class who sounded posh..gertie's father was a religious man...(again gertie is saying that she envies hilda's family, and that her life was so resricted and thus seemed like a prison!!..."unlike everyone else you did not judge me or ostracise me"!! "i was treated like a monster, a bad influence and unsafe around children"!...there's definitely something wrong with this woman!...). the three finally reached their destination ..one can learn that gertie's house was in the middle of nowhere. gertie's house was actually a small cottage in a muddy area...seems like gertie had some company at home ,bertie the dog, a cat , 2 pigs the horse, and a goat..... gertie's house had no electricity it was sort of primitive and crude...in reality, the place wasn't much ,yet staying in it meant alot to hilda...a cosy peaceful place to spend the night in, away from the fear and terror of the raids and bombardments.
that's it for ch 3 but i still think there is sth fstrange about gertie

KITTY NEALE'S_ LOST ANGELS_ chapter 2

ok...sooo... the war didn't stop. more houses torn down and more booms of explosives. each time the bombardment raid was executed , hilda, ellen, and mable fled to mable's air raid shelter. hilda was still waiting to hear from gertie , becaue at that moment, she was concerned about ellen's safety more than ever for all she had left was the little child. she was looking up to a rehousing (finding a new accommodation), but wasn't successful enough because it seems like she wasn't the only one "sans house", thus, she had to wait with the employees words sinking in her mind...she thought that , perhaps, it would really  be a good idea for her to go with her daughter to gertie's justn as the woman had suggested earlier. disappointed by the failure of her mission of being rehoused, hilda went back to mable's. both hilda and mable feared that the place they stayed in (mable's house) would , someday, be hit ,too. neither of them wanted to be homeless...then the two of them sat down discussing the issue of evacuating young ellen...and whether it were a good idea to send the girl to gertie's in particular, or not . mable then feels so depressed ,her eyes filled with tears after hearing that hilda were to leave too. mable felt so sad because both her husband and her kids have long been away...and now, her friend hilda was  thinking of going to somerset and leaving her behind.
with the air raid siren suddenly wailing, the 2 women jumped to their feet and headed hurriedly to the shelter. hilda was so worried about her daughter for she was at school (away from hilda at that moment). after half an hour of tension , the all-clear sounded ,and the two of them headed back home and there they had some tea. hilda had a plenty on her mind ..her parents, daughter, gertie and somerset, and a lot more...an hour later ellen came back from school to relieve hilda's worrying and was carrying a letter from school. the letter's content (the closing of the school by the end of the month) sealed hilda's decision to get ellen away from there. hilda felt so sad for she had to leave london and her friends there , especially mable ,yet she made up her mind to leave because she knew it was for their own sake and that her daughter would be safer at somerset .....

KITTY NEALE'S_ LOST ANGELS_chapter 1

sooo..... neal's novel is set during the 1940s, in battersea, south of london...a setting of utter chaos due to the devastations brought about by the deleterious war and its cantankerous weapons and bombardments. the protagonist, a nine-year-old girl named ellen, who lived with her mom hilda, woke up one day on thundering sound of the bombardments which blazed its way through her ears. thus, she, along with her mom, took refuge in the anderson shelter .there, ellen clearly told her mom about how scared she was, so her mom thought that , perhaps ,ellen would be safer if she were sent away from london, but the mom was hesitant and reluctant to do so because she didn't fancy the idea of sending her daughter off to some strangers, and thought of an old friend of her's ,gertie, as an alternate to those strangers. meantime, the city outside the shelter was a fiesta of fire works ,and was blazing with flames and burning down into ashes. the two sat there for ours, their ears deafened from the loud booms. finally, they heard the all-clear tone from the siren, and so with it they abandoned the shelter. shocked by the sight that beheld the city infront of them, the two stood paralysed, their feet stuck firmly to the ground. it was such a horrid sight. all of the houses, including theirs , were violently destroyed and crushed into rubble. on that day, hilda lost something more precious than any house...she lost her parents and thus had nothing left. she became a single parent with all her belongings gone with the wind , and with nothing left but for a naive , innocent child who left a bit of hope for the rest of hilda's life, and a chain with a crucifex that belonged to her mom . hilda's friend, mabel, welcomed the two in her house which was outside the bombed area. so...... ellen and her mom were still grieving and feeling all alone...                                                                                                         to be continued.......
