it feels pretty good that i started something and finished it all the way to the end.. yet it feels better that for the first time in my life i have finished sth useful.. i read A WHOLE BOOK that is 500 sth pages long...
as the story proceeded many unfortunate events happened to Ellen , which left her wretched and miserable for a lot of time..
first of all was earth's scum billy... well he is sod as Mable would say.. he got Ellen pregnant on her 16th birthday and was absolutely nonchalant about her or what she felt or the consequences.. Ellen started loathing herself and she loathed billy too.. when Ellen was in her 3rd month of pregnancy, Gertie (the family's savior) visited the stones to offer a brilliant solution to almost all there current problems :accommodation, shortage of food,supplies, and money...Ellen took the advantage of Gertie's presence and confessed to her parents who were utterly shocked at the news. the first solution to Ellen's problem would be getting billy to marry her..but that wouldn't work because he had gotten himself into trouble with sheila and married her... Gertie had come in time and the whole family decided to move to guildsth where Gertie and Maureen were starting a new business (the plant nursery)... Mable and her husband were shocked at the news too and offered financial help to assist Ellen and her baby.. Percy ,hearing what his brother had done , offered an alternative solution that is he marries Ellen and raises the child as his own under one condition .. (billy must never know that the child was his).. his parents rejected the idea at first .. but he stubbornly insisted claiming that it were his fault.. had he not let billy take Ellen home alone none of this would have happened.
the stones moved into the lavender cottage that was a cozy place in a nice village away from London.. which was something that soothed Hilda a bit. there they hand a very nice neighbor (Valerie) whom Ellen got along with. Ellen and val were both pregnant ..and were really good friends though val had this weird feelings thing. everyone was happy now and settled down except for Ellen who would always ponder about their marriage ... will she ever love Percy ? her delivery was due in august .. she had given birth to a baby girl (Sarah) and she grew fond of the girl and of Percy too especially after billy, sheila,their son, Mable and her husband visited them. she was thankful that billy was not her husband for he mistreated his wife and was so selfish .. Percy was billy's character foil... he didn't have the good looks but he surely had a pure heart and was a gentleman who loved Ellen so much and cared about her and Sarah like no one else did.. Ellen had her own place now and a happy family... she kept visiting Valerie and val in return visited her too.. before moving out of her parents' place Ellen actually sat down and confided in Hilda ...sth that should have been done ages ago ..any way it was some time after Sarah was one year old that val visited Ellen. on her way back home she stopped to buy a loaf of bread and there the woman at the shop told her about the rumors that are spreading around about the truth of Gertie and Maureen's relationship... so hearing the news val went back to Ellen's to inform her of what she heard..
fearing that Gertie would be kicked out of town and that along with her , stone's would lose their jobs, their accommodation and so will the Johnson's, Ellen hurried to warn gertie taking sarah along with her . it was a 20 minutes walk to where gertie was... with plenty on her mind, ellen was distracted and did not pay attention to the road she was to cross.. and that's when .............aaaaaaaah this part is the saddest of the whole story... a lorry hit sarah...sarah flew away (literally) and there was sarah no more :( .
poor ellen was drowned with grief and had gone hysterical at the loss of her first, only, and beloved child... she rejected everyone and secluded herself folded in her own grief and misery... she did not want to see valerie any more especially that val had this feeling that sara wont make it to school... ellen shouldn't have been so harsh with val because it was not her fault.. she knew sth horrible was to happen but had no clue when or where or.... val's child (pauline) was one week younger than sara and she was having another baby... sixth months after the accident ellen started getting over that horrid incident ... she had a sort of obsession about whether there was an after life or not , and was going around seeking an answer to her questions.. she went to the church but it was of no help..then she took maureen's advise and went to the tiny spiritual church... but nothing made sense to her there.. when she was about to leave, a woman appeared saying that ellen was sad and that she might be able to make her feel better and gave ellen her card.. ellen visited her indeed.. the woman told her to seek comfort and solution in nature and told her that the solution to her question was close to home.. the women even read ellen's palm and told her that her future is one of good luck and optimism...
ever since sarah's death, ellen and percy visited sara's grave every week and put some new fresh flowers replacing the old one's ... it was sara's second birthday (or was supposed to be so) and ellen along with percy and the stones visited the grave yard... ellen was all grieving again remembering her daughter and how she never got to see her talk or walk ... she had blamed herself earlier for what had happened and thought to herself that she deserved to die because she "killed" her own daughter... a week later, ellen had good news that brought them happiness once more.. she was pregnant and it was percy's son or daughter she'd be delivering by the month of march... it was pauline's birthday and that's when ellen decided that she had done val wrong and it was time to pay an old good friend a visit...
val was more than pleased to see ellen and welcomed her in though she feared that ellen would be disturbed by the presence of pauline and robert... ellen said that it were ok and she would be fine... so val brought pauline , soothed her (she was sick, had a fever and a cold..)and let her play with her wooden toys where she once used to play with sara.. when they were all sitting, pauline asked her mom to bring juice for both her and erra (sarah).. both ellena and val were appalled and stunned and ellen knew that it were true that there was an after life, later she saw a butterfly and thought that it were sara and felt happy for she for sure saw the sign the runes stones' woman had once told her about...so they lived HAPPILY EVER AFTER (unless ,of course, neale had decided to write a second part of the story where they would be miserable again or perhaps she could kill hilda, doug or the new baby.. i dunno)
the story has a happy ending which is something i like.. kitty neale has managed to keep us reading the story for i always wanted to find out what was going to happen especially with ellen, what will she do? will she have a boy or a girl? would billy ever find out that it was his daughter who died in the accident...?? i dunno but it seemed throughout the story , that both hilda and ellen would be somehow attracted to religion and then would come back saying that it never existed and it was rather a waste of time, and later this would repeat...
