at the beginning of the story we learned that there was war in battersea, london where ellen and her mother had once lived.tracing back to the 1940s we can find that indeed there was a war at that time...the world war 2 in specific.. it's odd actually that i started thinking that may be this is a true story...and perhaps neale wrote about sth related to her life or the story of someone close to her...or maybe even the story is partly about kitty herself!
BBC website has some info about world war 2... which also included the bombardments on battersea (ellen's hometown)..and it also includes some info about the child evacuation (earlier mentioned in the story by hilda)...plus...some personal experiences of the survivors of the war

sooo i think that she was there during the ww2... or i dunno..it just came to my mind...i searched for her birth year..nut i found nothing! what DO YOU THINK?
i think maybe the story is a mixture of her and others’ experiences during the war
